Anyone concerned about the speech and language therapy needs of a child or young person with a hearing loss should discuss their concerns with a speech and language therapist from the hearing Impaired Speech and Language Team contact via the Central Referral and Messaging Service on 01895 488 200 or email

You can use the Early Years Referral Team questions on the referral form (below) to help decide whether to contact the service or go to Talking Point which can help you to decide if your child might need speech and language therapy.

You can also discuss the child or young person with their teacher of the deaf.

Referrals are only accepted with parental consent and if the child has a moderate or severe speech, language and communication difficulty.

If the referral has been discussed and accepted the referral form should be marked for the attention of the Hearing Impairment Team.
