CNWL Addictions consultant presents at Opioid Study Day
02 December 2019
Dr Jeffrey Fehler, Consultant Psychiatrist in our Addictions Service in Hillingdon took part in an Opioid Study Day last Saturday, at the Academic Centre at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH).
This study day was arranged by the Pain Management Unit at MKUH to consider the use of opioids in the management of pain conditions, opioid prescribing patterns locally and nationally, and to launch draft prescribing guidelines. The audience included a varied mix of professionals including GPs, pharmacists, commissioners, physiotherapists, palliative care consultants, chronic pain nurses.
Dr Fehler’s task was to consider addiction to prescribed and non-prescribed opioids, present the neurophysiology of opioids as well as opioid maintenance treatments and detoxification.
Dr Fehler said, “This is not an audience I usually get an opportunity to engage with, but they seemed really interested about my experiences of managing this often complex patient group but also how a more integrated multi-professional approach across services can work. Analgesic misuse is a very topical at present, with a lot of recent media articles highlighting a potential opioid crisis nationally. It seems sensible for addiction services to start thinking with our colleagues in the Pain Clinic and primary care how we can support each other to improve patient care.”
