Ellington Ward, Older Adults Ward in Harrow receives QNOAMHS accreditation

14 March 2019

Our Ellington Ward at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow, has been accredited with the Quality Network Older Adult Mental Health Services (QNOAMHS) at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The ward is the first older adult inpatient ward in CNWL to be was assessed and accredited under the new and revised assessment framework.

Tanya Paxton, Borough Director for Harrow said, “This is fantastic! The team’s hard work has been recognised and I’m so proud of them. It shows the kind of dedication they put into looking after some of society’s most vulnerable people.”

Ellington Ward is an inpatient mental health ward for older people at Northwick Park Hospital Mental Health Unit that serves the Brent and Harrow population. The service assesses and treats patients, with input from relatives and carers from admission through to discharge.

“This is a tremendous achievement by the team at Ellington Ward,” said Michael Parkinson, Inpatient Manager /Matron on the ward.

And indeed it is no small feat.

QNOAMHS recognises good practice and high quality care on wards that provide inpatient services for older adults.

The process involved an initial self-assessment where the ward team assessed itself to see if it would meet the standards set out by the royal college.

To achieve accreditation the ward needed to meet 100 percent level 1 standards, 80 percent level 2 and 30 percent level 3 standards. The team then had a peer review from colleagues within CNWL to assess their readiness for a full inspection.

“We had a full day’s intense inspection by a team of people with lived experience and professionals from the Royal College,” said Michael.

“Behind the scenes, preparation for this assessment was intense and not dissimilar to that of an impending CQC inspection.”

Michael said the multi-skilled team of professionals on the ward, together with stakeholders really pulled together in order to achieve their goal.

“We are really proud of being accredited by the Royal College, and are pleased that it brings to a wider audience what we already knew−that is, we are a team of caring professionals who deliver outstanding care to our service users from Brent and Harrow. We are very much looking forward to our celebratory event on 12 April 2019.

"We believe that through good teamwork we continually demonstrate care and compassion in our work with older adults and the accreditation of Ellington Ward is just recognition of our work which will continue into the future," said Michael.
