Launch of Mencap and Electoral Commission easy read guides to voting

17 May 2017

Mencap has launched two new easy read guides for people with learning disabilities in partnership with the Electoral Commission ahead of the General Election 2017 (8 June).

The guide to voting uses jargon-free language, large front and images. It also looks at how to register to vote and the different types of voting.

There is also a supporter guide for care workers, family and friends who might be supporting someone with a learning disability.  It explains why it is important to vote, how elections work, what MPs do and has a series of FAQs. It also features some flash cards to help to explain.

Josephine Carroll, CNWL Head of Learning Disabilities Service, is pleased with the new initiative.

Josephine said: "It is really important that people with learning disabilities and communication problems have all the information in an understandable format to make the right decisions. Some local service users are very involved in discussions and want to make the right decisions for them and their families."

The guides can be downloaded here.

The last day to register to vote is Monday 22 May 2017.
