Public Health Agency Belfast visits CNWL’s Coombe Wood Mother and Baby Unit
13 March 2018
A delegation from the Public Health Agency in Belfast visited CNWL’s Coombe Wood Mother and Baby Unit yesterday, to find out how it works with a view of establishing their own mother and baby unit in Northern Ireland. The visit was part of a review of Perinatal Mental Health services in Northern Ireland.
The delegation was interested in learning about the historical background of Coombe Wood, the facilities that are available and the services provided. They met with staff and discussed
commissioning issues and practical issues like referral, admission and discharge processes.
They were interested to hear that the unit offers overnight stays for partners and significant others for limited periods, as this is not offered by most other mother and baby units in England. They also asked questions about the unit’s therapeutic programme, which has a strong focus on enhancing relationships between mothers and their babies.
Coombe Wood Mother and Baby Unit provides specialist perinatal inpatient and community services to pregnant and postnatal women experiencing mental health difficulties.
