St Charles Mental Health Unit redevelopment update
15 May 2018
Redevelopment works began at St Charles Mental Health unit in October 2017. Below is an update from Therese Cahir, Inpatient Service Manager:
I’m writing to let you know about the redevelopment of St Charles Mental Health Unit (MHU) over the past seven months.
The capital funding from NHS England allowed the redesign of St Charles’ Health Based Place of Safety (the Section 136 suite) to be larger, more comfortable, and more responsive to service users, their families and staff. The work will expand our capacity from one to three suites, with one dedicated to Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster CAMHS patients, for the first time. We have also refurbished our reception area and will provide a service user café for a more welcoming and secure environment for patients and visitors.
The construction work started in October 2017 and was planned for approximately six months; however, due to the reason listed below, completion date has now been extended to July 2018 and we’re sorry about that:
- Delays in the installation of the new pager system
- BT removing the payphone
- Changes around the de-escalation/new family room
- Additional works to re-floor the corridor areas
- Changes around the structural openings and having to redesign the steelwork.
People who would have been admitted to the Section 136 suite at St Charles MHU will continue to be taken to Brent and Westminster during the refurbishment period; our acute inpatient wards will not be directly affected and will remain open. There will inevitably be disruption to staff and patients over the coming months but we will limit this as much as we can.
If you have any questions or comments about the project, please call the St Charles Management Team on 020 8206 7281.
