Staying Steady exercise programme

This eight week exercise programme is for patients who may have poor mobility, muscle strength or balance, and are at risk of falling.

It comprises of group exercise and education designed to improve balance, strength, confidence and independence. It also includes discussion groups led by health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, nurses, dieticians and psychologists.

Who is this exercise group for?

The exercise group is for Camden residents who:

  • Are unsteady, have fallen, have a fear of falling, or are at risk of falling
  • Can independently transfer and mobilise a short distance with or without an aid
  • Are able to follow instructions (cognition, vision, hearing)
  • Are physically able to participate in an hour-long exercise session
  • Are able to carry over learning from sessions to everyday activities
  • Are medically stable.

How can someone be referred?

The service accepts referrals from the Integrated Primary Care Service in Camden, GPs and other health and social care professionals can refer to the Integrated Primary Care Service for a comprehensive falls assessment. Following this assessment, the therapist treating you (physiotherapist or occupational therapist) will refer you to a falls prevention exercise group, if appropriate.

Clinical referral scheme for physical activity

This is an 11-week falls prevention exercise programme for patients who are able to sit and stand from a chair without using arms and who can use a taxi independently. This is a more advanced exercise programme than the Staying Steady exercise programme.
