Enjoy your summer and share your successes

Those of you who have completed QI training will no doubt be familiar with the notion that each of us has two jobs; the job we do, and improving the job we do. Perhaps less familiar to people is the notion that once you’ve completed a successful project, you should then share your success with others. By sharing the successful outcome of a project you will help others to benefit from your learning. Your project can be the spark that leads to improvement elsewhere in the organisation. Do not be shy about sharing success; get in touch with us at cnw-tr.improvementsupport@nhs.net

For those of you just starting out, why not register for Bitesize QI, a monthly half-day training session online here.

Alternatively, for those happy to go it alone, the IHI modules QI101-QI105 of the excellent online training will give you what you need to get your project started. You also get certificates for completing each module- good for your CV.

QI spotted on Twitter this month

Always good to see the first steps taken toward a successful QI project. This one from Community Rehab Adult Service, Hillingdon.

Improvement Coach Development Programme (Wave 2) workshops

The first series of three-day workshops for Wave 2 took place at Argo House from 13 to15 May. 32 trainee improvement coaches learned about theirs and each other’s working styles, got to grips with run charts, and worked in teams on a series of PDSA cycles. The next set of workshops, also at Argo House, will take place from 15 to17 July.

All being well, the trainee coaches will qualify as QI improvement coaches in the autumn before joining the existing pool of improvement coaches who are available in each of the divisions to support QI teams with their projects.

Improvement Coach shares learning from QI project with trainee coaches

Hannah Coles.JPG

On 6 June, Hannah Coles, (Clinical Service Manager at the Children’s Therapy Services and Child Development Centre) and QI improvement coach joined delegates from Coaching Improvement Programme Wave 2 in a virtual session to share her learning from coaching a successful QI project. The project has achieved its aim to improve room booking processes (and consequently increase staff satisfaction) at Camden MOSAIC, an integrated service for children and young people with disabilities and their families.

Hannah passed on some top tips to the delegates and said “you’re never going to learn everything but you’re part of the QI network, so make sure you join in with that network”.

Management Fundamentals 2018/19 Webex support

Delegates on this year’s Management Fundamentals programme have been able to access monthly ‘Webex’ support for the QI projects they are leading. Feedback on these support sessions has been positive, with delegates quickly adapting to the virtual sessions. Simon Edwards CNWL’s QI Clinical lead (pictured below) has planned and co-delivered every session. Good luck to everyone on the programme with your project presentations later this month!

Improvement Science in Action (ISIA) Practicum

The Improvement Science in Action Practicum will be run by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). It has been designed to walk CNWL staff through the process of carrying out a local improvement project.

Over a period of 12 months project teams will run an improvement project which is supported through structured learning.

This will involve face-to-face training workshops, along with virtual support workshops during action periods (when teams are working locally on their improvement projects).

The first three face-to-face days will be held on 21 to 23 October 2019 in Central London. These will be followed by additional face to face days in February 2020 and June 2020 (dates to be confirmed).

We are looking for improvement project teams to apply as a minimum of three participants.  There is a limit of 30 project teams on the course.

Discuss your project with your Divisional QI Lead.

Life QI Tip of the month: Interpreting your charts

Life QI will help you to interpret your measurement for improvement. This is done by highlighting any move from common cause variation to special cause variation (a shift or a trend) in the data with a pink line above your chart.

0619_LifeQI.jpg

To get more information about this you can click on the pink line. This will indicate the data signalling a run chart rule and provide you with information on what this means.

There is guidance on how to add measures and charts to your QI project in Life QI here:  https://help.lifeqisystem.com/measures-and-charts
