CNWL and Oxehealth is proud to reveal that we have been shortlisted for the ‘Improving Mental Health through Digital’ category at the HSJ Digital Awards.

We have been recognised for outstanding contribution to healthcare and earn the opportunity to showcase our achievements on a national platform.

In its opening year, the HSJ Digital Awards aims to shine a light on the outstanding efforts and achievements that individuals and teams across the digital sector deliver on a daily basis.

At this first stage of judging, the shortlist was based on ambition; outcome; value; involvement, working together and crucially, how the project might be “picked up” and replicated elsewhere for the benefit of both patients and professional colleagues.

Adopting non-intrusive monitoring technology to improve safety and care quality on mental health inpatient wards

CNWL partnered with Oxehealth to improve the safety, quality, and efficiency of care on their mental health inpatient wards.

This partnership saw CNWL deploy Oxevision, a vision-based patient monitoring system developed by scientists at the University of Oxford to raise the standard of care across multiple service lines – the first deployment of its kind globally.

We integrated Oxevision into routine clinical practice on 10 wards (5 Older Adult, 4 Psychiatric Intensive Care Units [PICUs], 1 Low Secure Unit [LSU]) between November 2020 and March 2021.

Oxevision uses an infrared-sensitive camera to provide contact-free measurements of a patient’s vital signs and alert staff to potentially high-risk activity. This enables staff to be proactive for caring for patients safety and wellbeing, whilst promoting sleep and independence.

Daniel Bayley, Head of Insight and Benefits Realisation at Oxehealth said:

"The results of the evaluation at CNWL suggest that staff used Oxevision to make marked improvements across multiple outcomes including safety, care quality and patient experience. Deploying novel technologies in busy ward environments can be challenging at times, but the team at CNWL were able to effectively adapt their ways of working so that the tool became part of their clinical practice and enabled them to deliver these benefits to patients."
