HMP Bronzefield has officially been named the overall global winner of the World Hepatitis Day 'Round the World' challenge—beating out prisons from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and Africa!
This international competition, organised by The Hepatitis C Trust, challenged prison communities worldwide to collectively cover 40,075km—the equivalent distance around the Earth’s circumference—using any form of physical movement, including walking, running, cycling, and rowing.
Our incredible gym team, led by Wayne Harvey, went above and beyond to support the women at Bronzefield in tracking every step, stride, and stroke. They even measured the spurs and courtyard to ensure each movement was logged with precision. Whether it was time in the gym, taking part in Parkrun, working on the wings, or being out on association, women were encouraged and empowered to move more—and it paid off.
Participants at Bronzefield didn’t just meet the challenge—they smashed it.
Not only did Bronzefield win the female prisons category, but they also outperformed every male prison that took part in the challenge—including the combined entries from Scotland.
Thanks to the energy, enthusiasm, and commitment of everyone involved, Bronzefield not only won the UK title, but was named the top site worldwide, across all participating male and female prisons.
Patrick Gillespie, Service Director Health and Justice Services congratulated the team. He said: "This is fantastic news and am delighted for the Bronzefield Team."
This achievement reflects the power of teamwork, physical activity, and collective spirit—all in support of raising awareness for World Hepatitis Day and the ongoing efforts to eliminate hepatitis C in prison settings.
We’re proud of every woman who took part, and incredibly grateful to the gym team for their dedication and leadership.
We look forward to receiving our well-earned trophy!
