Milton Keynes Adult Speech and Language Therapy Inpatient Service assess and treat patients with eating, drinking and swallowing problems, and/or communication problems.

The service provides care in all wards at Milton Keynes General Hospital and at Windsor Intermediate Care Unit, Bletchley.

On leaving hospital, the patient may require continued support for their communication or swallowing. The speech and language therapist will liaise with ward staff and community speech and language services to arrange appropriate follow-up.

This service is for anyone with a swallowing and/or communication difficulty, while they are an inpatient in Milton Keynes.

The team receives referrals to see patients from medical teams and nursing staff. They make contact with patients within 48 hours of receiving a referral, or on the next working day if received at a weekend or bank holiday.

The service is available from 09:00-17:00, Monday to Friday. Some cover is provided over bank holiday weekends, to ensure that people do not stay ‘nil by mouth’ for unnecessarily long periods of time.
