At Coombe Wood, we are extremely proud of our experienced and expert team of clinicians, nurses, therapists and support staff who deliver a high-quality service to mothers/birthing parents, baby’s and their families.
The care, support and treatment you receive will be based on the team’s assessment of you and your baby's needs, and this will be regularly reviewed.
We practice trauma-informed care, which means we acknowledge that health organisations and teams need to have a complete picture of a patient’s life situation, past and present, in order to provide effective health care services with a healing approach.
Specialist inpatient unit
Coombe Wood provides a range of specialist mental health services for women in the last trimester of pregnancy or recent mothers who are experiencing mental health and/or emotional difficulties.
We can admit up to ten women experiencing moderate to severe mental health/emotional difficulties and their babies onto our specialist inpatient unit.
Our aim is to create an environment that feels homely, welcoming and natural as an aid to recovery and to ensure babies feel safe, secure, happy and stimulated. Partners and other family members are welcome and encouraged to visit.
Patients all have single rooms and there are facilities for their babies to sleep in their rooms where appropriate. The purpose-built unit also has modern, attractive living areas, enclosed gardens, outdoor and indoor play areas, a kitchen, dining room and a laundry room.
Patients admitted onto the ward will receive a therapeutic programme that, dependent on assessment of needs, can include family/couple therapy, psychotherapy groups, baby massage, baby development groups, anxiety management, relaxation techniques and an art psychotherapy group.
The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meet weekly to review and discuss your care needs. If you wish to attend this meeting, please tell your named nurse or doctor.
If you have any concerns about who is involved your care, or you wish to change your health professional then please talk to us.
We have a comprehensive group and individual therapy programme, which is a significant part of treatment and recovery.
The programme includes groups that focus on mental health, baby development and the parent and infant relationship. Some groups are fixed in the programme, but we also have new additions each term. We also offer individual therapy, including parent-infant therapy, family/couple therapy and specialist trauma therapy.
Below you can see an example of a group and therapy timetable. Please note, this is subject to change.
