In May, CNWL Arts in Health visited Camden Art Centre. We were given a tour of their current exhibition of Turner Prize-winning artist, Richard Wright. The exhibition was his first solo show in London, and his largest institutional exhibition in the UK for over 20 years.
The exhibition featured a range of work including glasswork and different forms of painting in different media. Many of the works featured geometric patterns and abstract forms influenced by Renaissance painting, Islamic design, geometric abstraction and Op art. Participants were particularly impressed by Wright’s large sight-specific wall-painting. This work also raised conversations about impermanence and the value of art that does not last, as it will be painted over at the end of the exhibition.
Following the tour and viewing the exhibition, participants were invited to do some self-directed drawing in response to the exhibition, many playing with symmetry, pattern-making and abstraction.
