We are proud to mark South Asian Heritage Month,  (18 July – 17 August) as a moment to celebrate the diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of South Asian communities across the UK and within the NHS.

This year’s theme, “Roots to Routes,” invites us to reflect on the journeys, past and present, that shape our identities and build our shared future. It’s a call to explore how traditions, migrations, family histories, and cultural influences have travelled through time to arrive where we are today.

Claire Murdoch, Chief Executive and Nick Green, Chief People Officer share a video to highlight and show appreciation for our South Asian colleagues contributions across the Trust.

Claire said: “I want to recognise that especially since the 1940s and the inception of the NHS, we are nothing without our South Asian colleagues. Our Trust has a wonderful diversity of people, and our South Asian colleagues have brought a richness of commitment, values of caring, and respect for elders and family.”

Nick said: “We are so grateful for our South Asian colleagues, many have gone through so much to be here. We know that’s not always an easy journey, sometimes being separated from family can be a hard thing and keeping those connections with one’s cultural identity – family, friends and history. So it’s a real moment to celebrate to bring it all together and celebrate.”

South Asian Heritage Month aims to raise awareness and appreciation for South Asia’s diverse cultural heritage. It seeks to bridge cultural gaps, promote inclusivity, and highlight South Asians' contributions in various fields.

A large number of online and in-person events are taking place across the UK which include cultural festivals and performances, film screenings, educational workshops and lectures, culinary experiences and community and social events. Find out more here.

For staff

Our Inclusive Heritage Network (IHN) would love to hear from you!

IHN Network Co-chairs Rizvana Ahmed and Babs Omosebi said:

"South Asian Heritage Month is a celebration of the heritages of the South Asian community whose ancestral roots stem from the composite eight South Asian countries of: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. During this month several countries secured independence from colonisation. It is a time for reflection, discovery and exploration of the evolving connections between the growing generations. It is a time to learn and enjoy the benefits of the diverse heritages by raising awareness of the richness of the lived experiences, faiths, traditions and culture (encompassing literature, art, music, foods and fashion) in the various communities which comprise these eight countries."
