Step-by-step our Community Adult Rehabilitation Services are leading the way to empower care home staff to prevent falls and save lives.
Falls can be a serious risk for older adults. A simple slip or trip can lead to life-changing injuries, long rehabilitation, and further medical complications. But there are simple steps people can take that make a real difference in reducing the chance of falls.
Care home and care agency managers from across North West London came together for the Medicines Optimisation and Falls Prevention event, hosted by Skills for Care in Brent.
CNWL led a session focused on falls prevention and management in both care homes and domiciliary care. Domicilary care, means supported living at home e.g. a paid carer visits homes to provide support for those that need it.
Leading the presentation were physiotherapists Pav Chana and Sanam Chaudhry.
The talk covered key topics including:
- What defines a fall
- Falls data and prevalence
- Risk factors and the effects of ageing
- The role of exercise (with a practical demo for participants)
- Vision, hearing, hydration, dementia, and footwear
- Tips for preventing and managing falls
- CNWL’s virtual falls prevention resource in Hillingdon
The session was well received, with lots of positive feedback from carers. Sunoj Jacobs, Team Lead Community Adult Rehab, said: “Well done - an amazing achievement and fantastic representation of our team!”
Preventing falls has been a priority for CNWL, and this November we will be publishing a new guide - made in collaboration with patients - and online resources for care home staff to access at any time. The falls prevention team will also be attending our Hillingdon Open Day event on 27 November – so if you have questions, come along – all Hillingdon residents are welcome.
