We are pleased to announce the appointment of Verity Miles as Deputy Director of Nursing, strengthening senior nursing leadership across our services. Verity will take up the role in January 2026, succeeding Kristian Lane, who has moved to a new position within the Health and Justice Directorate.

Verity brings extensive experience from Health and Justice services and Sexual Health, along with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate patient care.

Reflecting on what first drew her to nursing, Verity shared:

“Following an experience with a healthcare service in my teenage years, I felt drawn to nursing because I wanted to make a real difference to people who don’t always have a voice. Nursing brought together compassion, advocacy and practical action—and that sense of purpose has stayed with me throughout my career.”

Her career has included working in some of the most challenging healthcare environments, an experience she credits with shaping her as a leader.

“Working in prisons taught me so much from colleagues, leaders and patients who trusted me to listen, improve services and lead with kindness and integrity. Even though I thrive in chaos, those experiences taught me that the best leadership brings calm, clarity and compassion when people need it most.”

Verity’s background in Health and Justice and Sexual Health also informs her approach to tackling barriers to care and driving meaningful service improvement.

“These roles showed me the importance of collaboration, consistency and always seeing the whole person behind every clinical need. Strong relationships, good governance and genuine patient involvement are vital to delivering real change.”

Taking on the role of Deputy Director of Nursing is both a professional milestone and a personal honour:

“Professionally, this is an opportunity to support quality, safety and workforce development across a wide range of services. Personally, it feels like the culmination of years of dedication, and I’m genuinely honoured to be trusted to help others grow and thrive.”

As she steps into the role, Verity wants staff to know she is a leader who listens first.

“I care deeply about honesty, partnership and shared problem-solving. I want teams to feel supported, valued and confident in the work they do every day.”

Outside of work, Verity enjoys spending time with her family — and her Westie, Poppet.

In her new role, Verity will help to shape nursing practice across our services, with a focus on:

  • Supporting and developing the nursing workforce

  • Driving improvements in patient safety and quality of care

  • Championing clinical excellence and professional development

We look forward to welcoming Verity to her new role and to the positive impact she will bring to our services! Congratulations Verity!
