We’ve updated a booklet we put together to explain the signs and symptoms of flu and how they compare to Covid-19. It’s important we all understand the similarities and differences so we can respond to patient needs and our own needs accordingly. Some of the symptoms of flu and Covid-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis.
The leaflet 'Differences and similarities between Covid-19 and Flu' (opens pdf) compares Covid-19 and flu, given the best available information to date.
Flu and Covid-19 share many characteristics, but there are some slight differences. For Covid-19 often the symptoms include loss of taste and smell but there are other things too; see this one page information sheet on the symptoms.
There has never been a more important time to make sure you, and those you care for, are protected against the flu. Where vaccines are available, we should use them to help keep everyone safe.
With regards to Covid-19 there are now a number of Covid-19 vaccinations available. Most of the adult population have now received their first doses. This autumn the NHS are offering a booster vaccination to those in high risk groups and health and social care workers. This booster will help protect those at greatest risk of serious infection and will also help keep frontline healthcare workers safe and well. All staff will be offered a booster.
For flu, there are multiple FDA-licensed influenza vaccines produced annually to protect against the three or four flu viruses that scientists anticipate will circulate each year. The flu vaccination is safe and effective and must be given annually. It cannot give you the flu. We ask all staff to use the best protection they can and in the case of flu that is to get the vaccine from occupational health.
