CNWL welcomed its first wave of CNWL Cadets at an induction event near Kings Cross on Thursday 17 November.

The programme offers young people valuable work experience in the NHS and gives them the opportunity to experience a wide range of different disciplines to help them chose a career path that suits them.P1070087.JPG

Lizzie Mander, Project Lead for the CNWL Cadets, said she is so proud to be able to welcome the first group of new cadets since the 1970s. CNWL has had a Cadet Programme in the past but this is the first time that it will be open to more disciplines than nursing.

“We’re giving young people between the ages of 16 and 19 work experience in the rich and many services across CNWL,” she said.

“They’ll get everything from physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and psychology to nursing, children’s services and mental health services.

“It really does stretch right the way across CNWL.”

During the induction, the Cadets had a crash course on the history of the Cadet Programme and the NP1070070.JPGHS more generally.

They also learned about what to expect while on their placements, how best to conduct themselves during more challenging moments, and where being a CNWL Cadet could lead in the future.

The enthusiastic students each shared some of hopes for the placements. A small selection can be found below.

  • “I’d love to find out what or which area of the health system I want to work in.”
  • “I want to be able to learn from everyone and gain more skills.”
  • “My hope is to give patients the support they need.”
  • “I hope to gain an insight into the reality of being a healthcare professional.”
