A pilot study conducted in CNWL on using a consultant pharmacist as a coach and mentor for pharmacists working in general practice has been published.

The study was designed to find ways of providing more support to pharmacists within general practice following reported issues including a mismatch of expectations between pharmacists and their practices about the pharmacist role.

For this study, a Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) asked CNWL to test a new approach by using an experienced consultant pharmacist to help support three Primary Care Network pharmacists employed by CNWL as part of a collaboration with North Camden GPs.

CNWL Chief Pharmacist TF Chan said: “Historically these pharmacists are difficult to recruit and retain due to the support provided in Primary Care.

“Using a consultant pharmacist, we have demonstrated another model of support for the PCN pharmacists and GPs.

“It is amazing to see how they develop into confident autonomous practitioners and also take on new roles within the PCN during the pandemic.”
