Five million people in the UK provide unpaid care duties for their loved ones, supporting with everything from household maintenance to personal care.

These efforts often slip under the radar, and unpaid carers don’t always have the opportunity to speak out about the work they’re doing or the things they need to make it more manageable. Caring for somebody can take up much of a person’s energies, making it harder still to speak up.

The Advocacy Project has invited two expert speakers to share their insights and help raise the profile of unpaid carers. Dame Philippa Russell DBE, Vice-President for Carers UK, and Debbie Hustings, former Unpaid Carers Lead for NHS England, will join their next health equalities event on 31 October, 6pm to 7pm.

As part of this discussion, they will be focusing in on an area that many unpaid carers find frustrating: hospital discharge. Ensuring people get the best possible care both while in hospital and after going home needs to be a collaborative effort between trained medical professionals and the people who care for their patients every day and know their needs best. We will hear from our speakers about how this works currently and what can be done to improve the process.

There will be plenty of time for questions, and we will invite the audience to contribute your own views to the discussion.
