CNWL is committed to making sure patient safety, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of adults at risk and children is embedded across every directorate and in every aspect of the Trust’s work.

Safeguarding

All staff have a duty to be alert to potential safeguarding concerns in children and adults and are expected to be aware of and implement the Trust’s safeguarding policies and procedures and work in partnership with other agencies to help safeguard those at risk.

At CNWL, the lead for Safeguarding is the 'Associate Director of Quality, Safety and Safeguarding'. There are separate senior leads for safeguarding adults and children as well as an established group of adult safeguarding and Mental Capacity Act (MCA) practitioners and Named Professionals for safeguarding children.

We have representation at local Safeguarding Boards for both adults and children.

Safeguarding adults means protecting a person’s right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect. An adult at risk is any person who is aged 18 years or over and at risk of abuse or neglect because of their needs for care and/or support. We work to safeguard individuals in a way that supports them in making choices and having control in how they choose to live their lives and making safeguarding personal.

Safeguarding adults is a fundamental part of patient safety and wellbeing and the outcomes expected of the NHS. To do this we follow the six key principles as outlined in the Care Act (2014) underpin all our adult safeguarding work:

  1. Empowerment: people being supported and encouraged to make their own decisions and give informed consent
  2. Prevention: it is better to take action before harm occurs
  3. Proportionality: the least intrusive response appropriate to the risk presented
  4. Protection: support and representation for those in greatest need
  5. Partnership: local solutions through services working with their communities – communities have a part to play in preventing, detecting and reporting neglect and abuse
  6. Accountability: accountability and transparency in safeguarding practice

The Children Act 1989 and 2004 places a duty on us all to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, and to protect them from significant harm.

The Trust achieves this through:

  • Senior management commitment to the importance of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children who come into contact with our services
  • A clear line of accountability within the organisation for work on safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Listening to the views of children and their families
  • Robust staff training, support and supervision arrangements in place
  • Effective inter-agency working with Local Safeguarding Children Boards and other partners
