Dr Nick Rhodes and Dr Mehtab Ghazi Rahman’s radical environment change was recognised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for its impactful change on patient wellbeing during their stay on the psychiatric intensive chare unit (PICU).

The project turns a corner on what an inpatient mental health ward looks and feels like, with patients describing the change as “living in a rainbow.” The staff too are pleased with the change, commenting “it’s a more uplifting work environment to be in.”

The colours were chosen by patients with a model being presented so they could have feedback. Kevin Brennan – designer from the company Brinkworth who collaborate with organisations like the Tate Art Galleries and the Science Museum, created the colour scheme with patinets. The paint itself was donated by Delux UK.
