Another Omnicell automated medicine cabinet has been installed at St Charles.
The unit was installed on Shannon Ward, a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) - a specialist ward that provides inpatient mental health care, assessment and comprehensive treatment to individuals who are experiencing the most acutely disturbed phase of a serious mental disorder.
Chief Pharmacist TF Chan said: “The implementation went smoothly thanks to Bie Magadlela (matron), ward manager Cassandra Balisson and of course the nurses on the ward. Shannon is a PICU ward and we had to revise our planning to ensure minimum disruption to the patients. It was like planning a military operation!”
CNWL is installing nine Omnicell systems across St Charles. The first was installed in January.
It is designed to only allow access to the drug that has been prescribed thus removing the possibility of picking errors from the drug administration workflow. This reduces stock level errors.
It also allows for all documentation to be done electronically hence saving staff time.
