This year, the unlocking of restrictions coincided with the start of Ramadan. Kensington and Chelsea, Queens Park and Paddington Talking Therapies Services teamed up to design a new set of workshops. These addressed the unique experiences of Muslims who were observing the Holy Month of Ramadan as new freedoms were afforded to the country.

IAPT became aware that members of the local community were concerned about social interaction after this extended period of isolation. Those with longer term, low to moderate mental health conditions were finding this time especially challenging. In response to these needs, the team designed new workshops, based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles to help people learn evidence-based strategies on how to safely maintain their wellbeing whilst observing Ramadan and following the guidelines.

The first session was held on zoom with the Dalgarno Trust’s ‘Healthworks Enables’ partnership that includes organisations such as:

  • African Refugee Project
  • Iraqi Women’s League
  • St Antonio’s Eritrean Refugees Women’s Group
  • Asian Women’s Group

The session was well attended. One participant said: “I have personally enjoyed it and I’d recommend it too. The workshop was so informative and was delivered in a way that was engaging, clear and concise.”

Another participant said: “a good range of practical and understandable ideas were covered on how to make the most of the Holy Month of Ramadan – particularly on improving and maintaining a positive mindset for a happier and productive lifestyle in Ramadan and after Ramadan. The workshop also stressed the importance of following the lockdown restrictions in terms of worshipping in the mosque or any other shape of religious performances.”

Additional feedback given included:

  • “Very informative with approachable and friendly speakers”
  • “Interesting discussions that also gave a space for questions”
  • “The content of the presentation was very interesting, well organised and easy to understand”

The newly appointed Community Development Manager for Community Living Well (CLW), Michelle Poponne, is continuing to gather insight and develop outreach opportunities such as the Wellbeing in Ramadan workshops. Working Closely with Megan Waterman, Outreach Lead for CLW, they are developing new ways to address and support the needs of the community as a whole.

In weeks to come, Michelle will be delivering ‘Social Wellness’ sessions as part of NHS Long Covid, Pulmonary Rehab Pilots. Michelle and Megan will be delivering a brand new ‘Nature for Wellness’ session at the Lancaster West Estate Tea Gardens. Local residents will be invited to take part in a Covid secure way.
