Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) hosted their biannual Inner Borough Resident Doctor Quality Improvement Presentation Event. The hybrid event brought together over 35 attendees from Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster sites to celebrate innovative Quality Improvement work across CNWL.
Two Resident Doctors were awarded for their outstanding work. Dr Aangelo Gurusinghe won first place for his project titled “VTE Compliance”. Dr William Waugh was runner-up for his project titled “Improving discharge summaries on Vincent Square Eating Disorders unit”.
"This project began after a tragic loss on our ward. It's shown us that sustainable change can come from building safety into our systems and processes. Thank you everyone for your support" - Dr Aangelo Gurusinghe
The event was chaired by Dr Tami Kramer, Clinical Lead for Quality Improvement and Consultant Child & Adult Psychiatrist at CNWL, and showcased 4 Resident-Doctor led QI.
Showcasing Innovation and Impact
Resident Doctor-led presentations also included:
- Dr Muge Ulusoy Altinoklu (SAS): “Jameson: KCW Memory Service: Reducing Waiting Time From Referral to Assessment”
- Dr Fatima Elshams (FY1) and Dr Hussain Karimjee (GPST): “Improving Efficiency and Clarity in Liaison Psychiatry MDT Meetings”
All presentations demonstrated successful and engaging approaches to improving patient care and service delivery, showcasing the breadth of improvement work happening across our organisation.
Each project reflected clear commitment to rigorous QI methodology and measurable outcomes, demonstrating the incredible work happening across CNWL to continuously improve the care provided to patients.
Key Learning Points
Several important themes emerged from the event that will guide future QI work:
All presentations demonstrated the use of a robust QI approach with iterative testing and Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, with all projects demonstrating measurable impact on patient care or service delivery. There was a notable focus on exploring innovative ways to enhance clinical processes through technological solutions.
Dr Gurusinghe’s project particularly stood out for demonstrating regional sustainability and spread, showing how successful improvements can be scaled beyond their original setting. Dr Waugh’s project demonstrated excellent team engagement, which is crucial for ensuring sustainability even after the project lead moves on.
Key learning points highlighted the invaluable role of involving Experts by Experience to ensure patient-centred improvement efforts, along with using QI tools like run charts to track meaningful change over time.
Looking Forward
These presentations demonstrate the impressive dedication of CNWL's Resident Doctors and the ongoing commitment to improving patient care across the Trust. We look forward to seeing how these projects continue to develop and provide a sustainable impact to CNWL's services.
Thank you to everyone who presented.
