International Pharmacy Technician Day is on 18 October and now is the chance for you to nominate a technician who is ‘driving the profession forward’.

This is the perfect opportunity for CNWL’s Pharmacy Technicians to be visible and showcase their unique roles.

You can send you nominations to the Association of Pharmacy Technicians (ATPUK) via membershipdirector@aptuk.org. Nominees will be shared on social media so including an image of the person you wish to celebrate would be fantastic.

Once you have made your nomination, you can also contact Jason Benning, CNWL’s Lead Medicines Optimisation Pharmacy Technician, who will share across the department and Trust-wide.

Email Jason a short statement on j.benning@nhs.net:

  • In just a few sentences, describe in your own words, one of the following:
    • What does being a Pharmacy Technician at CNWL mean to you?
    • What makes you proud of the Pharmacy Technicians at CNWL?
    • Where can you see the CNWL Pharmacy Technician roles in five years’ time?

Pharmacy_technician_day.jpgInternational Pharmacy Technician Day is an opportunity to celebrate and share with the pharmacy community some of the fantastic achievements that pharmacy technicians continue to deliver.

Anshu Rayan, CNWL’s Deputy Chief Pharmacist said that this is a great way to celebrate the “gems” we have in CNWL.

“The diversity of their roles and responsibilities brings immense opportunities to maximise the benefit to patient care, enhance safety and contribute to many MDTs,” Anshu added.

“Some examples of these are as follows: medicines administration; medication reviews and support to take medicines in patient home; medicines optimisation such as medicines reconciliations; training district nurses and other healthcare professionals on medicines optimisation; patient counselling; ensuring the work in Pharmacy operations including the H&J and sexual health pharmacies is efficient and that patients obtain their medicines in a safe and timely manner; education and training; appropriate and effective supply of prepacks and over labelled medicines particularly across all sexual health clinics; Covid vaccine management; carrying out a range of audits to measure against set standards and finally being the backbone of all our medicines and pharmacy services.

“Without Pharmacy Technicians our Pharmacy services would not be possible. Thank you all for your continued dedication and professionalism.”

How are we driving the Pharmacy Technician profession forward at CNWL NHS?

The roles and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technicians, as well as the services delivered by Pharmacy Technicians within CNWL, are incredibly diverse.

CNWL Pharmacy Technicians are:

  • Managing the procurement, dispensing and distribution of medicines across the trust
  • Leading on trustwide education and training
  • Maintaining IT systems and supporting projects to introduce Omnicell technology to the trust
  • Administering medicines to patients on wards and patients at home
  • Providing medicines optimisation services to bedded wards and community mental health teams
  • Recruiting, line managing and supervising pharmacy staff

In short, the Pharmacy Technicians at CNWL are delivering services that extend beyond what is typically seen in departments elsewhere. They are resilient, enthusiastic and caring.
