At the heart of CNWL Step-Down service is Sonia the kind of person who puts people first, always. Her focus? The residents. Supporting them as they leave hospital, helping them feel connected, capable, and at home in the world again.

So when Sonia heard about the Volunteer to Career (VtC) programme, a little light went on. What if we could bring in volunteers in a way that truly benefits our residents, but also gives the volunteers something back? A sense of purpose. A way to learn. A chance to care.

She wasn’t interested in ticking boxes or just “having help.” This had to be meaningful. For the people they support. And for the people giving their time.

We sat down for a chat with Sonia to hear more:

I’m the Step-Down Coordinator, which means my role revolves around helping our residents regain their independence and feel connected to the community again. When I learned about the VtC programme, I knew it could really make a positive impact. It’s not just about adding more hands to our team - it’s about giving volunteers the chance to grow, learn, and gain experience while creating a space where everyone; from the team to the residents can work together, share experiences, and learn from one another.

The volunteers have been absolutely phenomenal! Whether it's running arts and crafts, organising games, or simply offering companionship, they’ve brought so much energy into the daily lives of our residents. Their presence has not only brightened the residents' days but has helped them feel more engaged, supported, and uplifted in their recovery. It also gives our residents something to do that isn’t focused on their mental health. Things like painting, playing cards, or simply having a friendly conversation and these moments offer a break and help people feel more like themselves again. It’s meaningful for the residents and the volunteers, and those shared moments really do make a difference.

It’s made our service more vibrant, more connected, and it's been incredible to see the lasting impact they’ve had on both the residents and our team.

The volunteers have really grown! They’ve been hands-on in supporting residents through some pretty tough challenges, and the feedback we’ve gotten from them has been really positive. Many of them have said it’s been incredibly fulfilling to make a tangible difference. And it’s amazing that we’ve even recruited two of them into our team; it just shows how the VtC programme gives them the confidence and skills they need to take the next step in their careers. It’s been so rewarding to watch!

I can’t recommend it enough! The VtC programme brings so much heart and energy to the team. It’s not just about having extra hands on deck -  it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels supported, valued, and connected. The impact on our residents, our team, and the volunteers has been beyond amazing. If you want to boost your service, strengthen relationships, and empower your team, VtC is definitely the way to go. You’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

A MEGA thank you to Sonia, who’s welcomed four amazing volunteers and is already planning to bring in more. And of course, a HUGE cheer to the whole Step-Down team - you’re proof that kindness, creativity, and teamwork really can change lives.
