Buckinghamshire Priority Dental Service (BPDS) are a team of dentist, dental therapists, dental nurses and reception and administrative staff who provide a high standard of care and service to patients.
What we offer
We offer a service for patients who fit the criteria listed below, and because of this are unable to have care provided to them by a general dental practitioner:
- Adults and children with severe learning disabilities
- Adults and children with severe physical disabilities
- Adults and children with complex medical problems
- Adults and children with severe mental health problems
- Children with severe behavioural management problems
- Adults and children with very severe anxiety and dental phobias * this is available in Buckinghamshire only, not Milton Keynes.
Sedation
- Inhalation Sedation Treatment (IHS) – in clinic
- Intranasal Sedation Treatment (IN) – in clinic
- Intravenous Sedation Treatment (IV) – in clinic
- General Anaesthetic (GA) – in hospital setting
Domiciliary
Domiciliary visits where appropriate for patients that cannot/do not leave their home. Not all kinds of dental treatment are possible in these circumstances.
Hoist
We have a hoist at all our sites to enable patients in wheelchairs to transfer into the dental chair.
Plus size
We have a bariatric chair and wheelchair tipper at our Shipley Court clinic in Newport Pagnell to allow plus size patients to receive dental care.
For patients who normally pay for their dental treatment, NHS standard charges still apply when treatment is provided by the Community Dental Service. Dental treatment is allocated to one of three bands and the charge varies accordingly.

Patients who are exempt from payment should bring proof of exemption from charges to their appointments. There are some cases where patients may be exempt from some or all of the treatment costs. For more information on whether this applies, telephone 0300 330 1348.
Referrals
You need to be referred to our service.

Our service are generally only available to individuals who are referred to us by a medical or dental practitioner or other health/social care worker and individuals who fall into one or more of the following categories:
- Learning disabilities
- Severe mental health problems
- Severe behavioural management problems (may include young children requiring general anaesthesia)
- Complex medical problems
- Very severe anxiety and dental phobias * only for people living in Buckinghamshire – this is not available in Milton Keynes
- Physical disabilities who either may need domiciliary care or due to their disability are unable to access a local NHS dentist
And as a result of one or more of the above, this impacts their ability to receive dental care from a General Dental Practitioner.
If an individual does not fall into any of these categories, we regret they will not be eligible to be seen by our service.
